That seems small praise for something that looks this good, but with games more than anything else beauty cannot afford to be skin deep. As such it’s not really worth importing, although if it ever does make it to the UK then it’s certainly something to keep an eye out for in the sales. Muramasa isn’t a bad game by any means but its peerless graphics are infinitely more impressive than the shallow and repetitive combat. If we could hang a GIF of it on the wall we would and we’re not being in the slightest bit facetious when we say that. From a gameplay perspective they’re again mediocre but the octopus battle that is also a homage to The Great Wave Off Kanagawa is simply stunning. The only visual element that doesn’t eventually wear out its welcome is the astounding boss battles. The game looks like it’s trying to be a ninja-themed version of Metroid but really the only similarity is the 2D action and the hours of backtracking across previously visited locations.Īs if to prove that attractive visuals can never forgive mediocre gameplay no matter how gorgeous the backdrops are you soon get sick of them, after having to traipse through them for the umpteenth time for no very good reason. The lack of any real exploration or puzzle element is clearly detrimental to the game’s long-term appeal, with most environments being empty of anything but their own beauty. You can forge collected katanas together to give them special abilities, but even then the difference is still minor. But on the standard difficultly at least button bashing comes as standard and after a few hours it’s impossible for the visuals to compensate for the shallow nature of the combat.Ĭollecting new swords is clearly meant to alleviate this problem, but no matter how many there are the differences between them are so minor as to be irrelevant. The original never made much use of the Wii’s motion controls and so on the Vita combat relies merely on some very simple button combos, with the most strategic consideration being which of the three types of sword you use. Muramasa Rebirth (PSV) – screenshots don’t do it justice Unfortunately, not only are these new characters and their mini-scenarios the only substantial new extras but they’re also paid-for downloadable content. They don’t have any unique abilities either, although the four new characters for the PS Vita version are more clearly delineated: a shuriken-throwing ninja, a peasant with a hoe, a female ogre with a giant axe, and a cat girl. There are two main playable characters – a princess and a ninja – but there’s less difference in their stories than the game likes to pretend, as they merely visit the same locations but in a different order. Like most of Vanilliaware’s games Muramasa is essentially a 2D scrolling beat ’em-up, reminiscent of the early Ninja Gaiden games or The Legend Of Kage.

So the question is not whether Murasma looks better on PS Vita but whether it plays better… It’s never actively bad, and often has some very interesting ideas, but it’s always suffered from an innate shallowness. In terms of gameplay though Vanilliaware’s work has never equalled the artistry of its visuals. We were happy to describe Muramasa as having some of the best graphics of the current generation, and they’re even more impressive on the PS Vita. Then known as Muramasa: The Demon Blade the game is the work of Japanese developer Vanillaware, famed for their extraordinary 2D sprite work in cult games such as GrimGrimoire and Odin Sphere.

Even if it was only released as a digital download we felt sure Muramasa Rebirth would’ve been published here at some point, if only because the original Wii version was picked up by Rising Star Games.
